CHETAK 17


CHETAK 17 is an artist-run printmaking studio that presents print work made by using traditional techniques.
The core mission for the studio is to preserve and celebrate various intaglio print techniques and increase understanding of printmaking by hosting talks and workshops. The studio also acts as a meeting space for all printmakers to gather ideas. Chetak 17 is also providing print consultants for beginners, artists, and art institutions.
The studio was founded in 2017 by Bayu Utomo Radjikin, Samsudin Wahab and Faizal Suhif. The studio is located at 17A Jalan Wangsa Murni 4, Taman Wangsa Melawati, Kuala Lumpur.

Bayu Utomo Radjikin

(b. 1969) Bayu Utomo Rajikin has established himself as one of the major Malaysian artists of his time, venturing in various fields of fine art. Graduated with a Bachelor (Hons.) Fine Arts from UiTM, Shah Alam. He is actively involved with the House of Matahati art programmes and exhibitions, the "MATAHATIJOGJA" held at Sangkring Artspace, Yogyakarta in Indonesia (2010) being his recent show in Matahati.
His recent solo was at the G13 Gallery in 2017 entitled "Gejolak". Bayu also frequently exhibits paintings in group shows, A charity exhibition, the ArtAid 18 held in Whitebox Publika, Kuala Lumpur,

Faizal Suhif

Faizal studied Diploma in Fine Arts UiTM Malacca (2002-06) Degree Hons in Fine Arts UiTM Shah Alam (2006-08)and completed a Master’s degree in Fine Art UiTM Shah Alam in 2013. Specializing in printmaking and has won various awards such as Honourable Mention, NBC 1ST Screen Print Biennale, Japan, 2007,UOB Painting of the Year Bronze Award 2015, and Excellent Master Award UiTM 2013. Has held 9 solo shows and participated in over 100 group shows in Malaysia, Bangladesh, USA, Japan, Germany, Singapore, Indonesia, Beijing, Macau, Taiwan, Thailand, Macedonia, and Turkey.

Samsudin Wahab

(b. 1984) Samsudin Wahab majored in printmaking, graduating in 2007 with a Bachelor (Hons.) Fine Arts from UiTM, Shah Alam. He regularly exhibits paintings in group shows in Malaysia, and in 2008 held a solo entitled Enough! in Kuala Lumpur. In 2009, Samsudin was granted the Rimbun Dahan 15th Australia-Malaysia Visual Arts Residency, which culminated in an exhibition of paintings and sculpture, and a performance piece. Samsudin was also a 2009 winner of the Malaysia Emerging Artist (MEA) Award.

Azam Aris
Azam (b. 1983) graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Art (Hons.) from UiTM Shah Alam in 2007.The following year, Azam won the Artist Residency at HOM Art Trans, which led to his 2008solo show titled “Float”. He has participated in numerous group exhibitions, including Ties ofTenggara, “Young Contemporaries” series and “Flush” a group of Sebiji Padi. Azam’s work wasdisplayed at Gwangju Fine Art Gallery in South Korea, at VIVA art fair held at Bacolod City inPhillipines. Azam has a unique style that borders on the dark and the horrific, and references hispersonal feelings towards life as a Malaysian artist. He constantly expanding the scope of hispractice and experimenting with various media, including photography, printmaking, painting,drawing, installation and performing art.

Fadhli Mokhtar
Fadli Mokhtar (b.1986 Perak, Malaysia) is Malaysian based artist. He currently lives and works between Pahang and Kuala Lumpur. Having pursued his formal fine art training from Universiti Teknologi Mara Malaysia (UiTM), he currently holds an MFA. He is working primarily in alternative and experimental printmaking. His approach to artmaking is inspired from the variety of marks produced in the printing process. His investigation is driven by fascination and desire that emphasize on how the idea of possibilities in printmaking can be utilized out of its traditional approaches.
Fadli’s artistic endeavours has provided him with opportunities to exhibit his work on both local and international scale; he has been featured in group shows in China, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom, Bulgaria, Colombia, Serbia, and Indonesia. Notably, he spent four years in Japan, where he held three solo exhibitions and artist residency program between 2015 to 2018. His artwork is included in the collections of Gallery of Japan Artists’ Association Japan, Gallery Tuanku Nur Zahirah , Malaysia , Faculty Of Art & Design UiTM Shah Alam, Malaysia, Faculty Of Art & Design UiTM, Kelantan Malaysia , Gallery Malaysia National University UKM Bangi, News Straits Times Berhad Malaysia, University Malaya Medical Centre (UMSC), Malaysia.

Haslin Ismail
Haslin Ismail (b. 1984) from Johor graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Art (Honours) from Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) in 2007. He has been creating and exhibiting his fantastical art pieces in various exhibitions since 2000. He was a winner of the grand prize for In-Print: Contemporary British Art from the Paragon Press held at National Art Gallery in 2006.His first solo exhibition ‘Exorcismus Persona: Windows Into Fantasy Worlds of Haslin Ismail’ was at the RA Fine Arts Gallery in 2009. He was also the grand prize winner for the prestigious Young Contemporary Award (2010) at the National Art Gallery with his entry of a complex and intricate paper/book art installation. He has also held residencies at Rimbun Dahan, Malaysia (2011) and for the S-AIR exchange program at Naebono Art Studio, Sapporo, Japan, in partnership with HOM Art Trans for two months, from October to late December 2019, before the pandemic era of Covid-19 has just begun.

Fadhli Ariffin
Fadhli Ariffin (b. 1989, Perak Malaysia) is a multidisciplinary artist born in Taiping, Perak. He earned a bachelor's degree in printmaking at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), in 2013. Fadhli's practice spans across various media, including painting, drawing, sculpture, woodcut and lithograph prints. Fadhli's career began through the HOM Art Trans Residency program, where he had his first solo show, titled (P)residen (2015). He then participated in a number of group exhibitions and art fairs in Malaysia and India before his second solo exhibition at Rissim Contemporary, titled Peristiwa Di Awangan (2021). Fadhli Ariffin had a solo booth at KL ArtExpo (2022) for his Frekuensi series which sold-out on preview night. He is one of 5 members of Chetak 17, a print-making collective founded by Bayu Utomo, Samsudin Wahab, and Faizal Suhaif. His artwork explores his surroundings, thoughts, and feelings towards the identity of an artist.
